GorillAR
A photoreal silverback walks the campus trails on an iPad. The real gorillas stay undisturbed.
Case study
The encounter, without the disturbance.
- Client
- Habitat XR, for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund
- Year
- 2021–2022
- Role
- AR app development in Unity.
- Platform
- iPad (iOS).
The brief
The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda wanted visitors to learn gorilla behaviour. Habitat XR produced the campus's immersive programme.
Conservation tourism has a paradox. The closer visitors get, the more they disturb what they came to see.
The approach
- Put the trek on the trail
Seven numbered sign boards mark the campus trails. Visitors scan each one to continue.
- Let the silverback lead
A photoreal AR silverback takes visitors on a foraging adventure, so the wild animals stay out of it.
The outcome
GorillAR is live on the App Store. The partnership launched publicly in June 2022.
