GorillAR

GorillAR is an augmented reality iPad app for the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda. A photoreal silverback leads visitors on a foraging adventure along the campus trails, so people can learn gorilla behaviour without disturbing the animals in the wild. Habitat XR produced the campus's immersive programme; Worldbuild worked on the AR app in Unity (2021–2022).

What it tests

Conservation tourism has a paradox: the closer visitors get, the more they disturb what they came to see. GorillAR tests whether AR on a real trail can deliver the encounter while keeping the animals out of it.
