Strangeways: The Only Way Out Is Through is a live VR theatre piece inside the hand-drawn world of strangeways. Ferryman's show page calls it the 2026 inaugural production of The Crossing, written and directed by Tanvi Agrawal (they/them). Eventbrite describes it as a lab production with Ferryman Collective and Shtik XR.

Echo, a neurodivergent artist, has withdrawn into Strangeways. Zephyr, their closest friend, cannot reach them alone, and asks the audience to enter. Each environment is a memory, a defense, a fear, or a way of coping.

Echo then leads that audience through a world they made. Conversation changes how the rooms read. Ferryman's page says the audience does not change Echo. They help Echo change how Echo sees themself. The piece asks people to witness, question, and interpret, and treats neurodivergence as a source of making.

Role

Worldbuild's credit is the world, not the play. Dale P. Deacon built Strangeways with Alex Bosman for Shtik XR. That world was an official selection of Venice Immersive 2024, in competition, and a Raindance Immersive Best Art World nominee. The record for the world is strangeways.

The poster calls this a theatrical lab production, written and directed by Tanvi Agrawal, in collaboration with Ferryman Collective and Shtik Studios. Eventbrite names the collaborator Shtik XR. Ferryman's apprenticeship page names Agrawal the inaugural apprentice. That page spells the surname Agarwal once. The poster, the show page, and the biographical note use Agrawal.

The show page sketches Agrawal's path from acting and directing into 360 film, an augmented-reality project at UC Berkeley, work with Ferryman, UCLA REMAP, and MIT Reality Hack. During an MBA at UCLA Anderson they founded RealityCheck, a platform for finding immersive work. They post as @tanvixreality.

Ferryman Collective describes itself as an Emmy-winning company. Its About page lists Uncanny Alley: A New Day with a 2026 Emmy for Outstanding Emerging Media. The same blurb also says that show was nominated. The Emmy is not a Strangeways credit.

Performers

The show page lists Brendan Bradley and Ona Zimhart. The lines under their names are earlier Ferryman credits, not roles in this piece. Bradley's line names Uncanny Alley, Non Player Character, Dolly Parton Mountain Magic Christmas, and Succubus. Zimhart's line names Uncanny Alley, Find WiiLii, and Gumball Dreams.

The show page prints 2026. Eventbrite's description names Friday, October 2, 2026. Now Showing, read on 21 September 2026, lists these Pacific times.

Eventbrite says each performance runs about 30 to 40 minutes, for a small audience, in VRChat. A ticket includes a YouTube livestream. The stream link arrives by email. You can watch it on a computer, phone, tablet, or TV. Only the people in VR speak to the actors or change the story.

To be in the room you need a VR headset, a VRChat account, and a ticket. Now Showing asks for an untethered Meta Quest 3, Quest 3s, or Quest Pro, or a PCVR headset tethered to a computer, and says tethered PCVR looks clearer. Eventbrite says an Oculus headset or Steam. After purchase, Ferryman emails how to join the performance world.

Eventbrite's notes for motion sensitivity are to stand if that helps, use a fan, and turn on VRChat comfort turning and tunneling before the show. The piece talks about mental health. Ferryman says parental discretion for younger children. Refunds run until one day before the event.

What it tests

A festival art world and a live show do different work. Strangeways already showed that pen-and-ink drawings can be a place people enter. This production asks whether that place can hold performers and an audience who change what happens, without reducing the drawings to a backdrop.
