Strangeways
Strangeways is a psychedelic passage through illustrator Chris Bianchi's hand-drawn mind: corridors that twist into gardens, sketches that become inhabitable rooms. Built for Shtik XR, it was an official selection of Venice Immersive 2024 (81st Venice International Film Festival) and a Raindance Immersive Best Art World nominee.
Role
VR worldbuilding, design, and production — Dale P. Deacon with Alex Bosman, Jacob Mwesigwa, and collaborators including Adam Lieber (director / sound), Wondering Chew (avatars), Jamie D. Huxley (words), HAL Sorta (photographs), and Azad Balabanian (plane-crash photogrammetry).
In 2025 the team received a grant to port the experience to HTC Viverse (web-VR), extending the same art direction beyond native VRChat clients.
What it tests
Can 2D illustration survive as a place? Strangeways answers by refusing polygons-as-default: line, smear, and dream logic become architecture. Festival selection proves curatorial seriousness; the Viverse port proves the work can leave a single platform without losing its hand.
