Reeducated
Reeducated is the Emmy Award-winning VR documentary by Sam Wolson (Empire of Dirt) with The New Yorker — investigative storytelling about Xinjiang detention that demanded more than a flat screening. Dale Deacon contributed VR worldbuilding: spatial frames that support witness and documentary craft inside an immersive container.
Role
Worldbuilding contribution on a Venice / Emmy-caliber collaboration (2021 Venice Biennale orbit in Past Clientele). Credit stays proportional: the editorial and directorial authorship remain with Wolson, Empire of Dirt, and The New Yorker.
What it tests
Documentary Immersion fails when spectacle outruns evidence. Reeducated asks whether a constructed world can hold testimony — orientation toward sources, restraint in set dressing, and a viewer path that does not invent what journalism cannot show.
